In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and

the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:

Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke

and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

2 Timothy 4:1-2

 OVERVIEW

In this course the student explores the principles of biblical preaching, with an emphasis on the expository
method. Biblical foundations for the preaching task are examined, the components of a sermon are discussed,
and opportunities for implementation are provided. The student also considers the rules of effective sermon
delivery and the significance of handling the Scriptures in pastoral ministry. Throughout the course, the
student studies the skills, tools, principles, and resources necessary for sound biblical proclamation.

OBJECTIVES

1. To articulate a biblical-theological foundation for the necessity and practice of preaching in the church.
2. To begin learning the nature, purpose, and elements of expository sermons and their effective delivery.
3. To master the components of, craft the structure for, and practice the delivery of expository sermons.

 REQUIRED TEXTBOOK

Robinson, Haddon. Biblical Preaching: The Development and Delivery of Expository Messages. 2nd ed.
Grand Rapids: Baker, 2001.

Additionally, a non-paraphrased English translation of the Bible is also required for all assignments.
Acceptable translations include such versions as the KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, RSV, NRSV, HCSB, or NIV.
For this course, please avoid such versions as The Message Bible, the Living Bible, the Good News Bible, etc.

 LEARNING ACTIVITIES

 1. Textbook Reading Assignment: Students are required to read the two assigned chapters of the Robinson
textbook prior to each of the class sessions for which they are due. Class presentations will focus on these
two assigned chapters, and also be supplemented by additional materials. Completion—or at least
thoughtful consideration—of the exercises at the end of each chapter is highly encouraged, but they will
not be collected. On the last session of the course (December 6), submit a brief, 4-paragraph evaluation of the course textbook, including a statement of the number of pages you have read.

. Your 1st paragraph should briefly summarize the contents of the book.
. Your 2nd paragraph should highlight those aspects of the book that you found to be most helpful.
. Your 3rd paragraph should critique one or two aspects of the book that you think could be improved.
. Your 4th paragraph should be statement of recommendation (or non-recommendation).

2. What’s the Big Idea? Assignment: Create a clear, concise, and captivating “big idea” for three of the
twelve biblical texts listed below. Be sure to select one text from each of the three categories (i.e., write a
“big idea” for one text from the Old Testament list, a “big idea” for one text from the Gospel list, and a
“big idea” for one text from the Epistle list.) For each biblical text you select, format your work as
follows: (a) subject; (b) complement; (c) big idea. Chapter 2 of the Robinson textbook, along with the
second half of the first class session, will assist you with this assignment, which is due on the second
session of the course (November 1).

Old Testament

. Genesis 11:1-9
. Psalm 3:1-8
. Isaiah 42:1-9
. Jeremiah 18:1-12

Gospel

. Matthew 14:22-33
. Mark 5:1-20
. Luke 24:13-35
. John 5:1-15

Epistle

. Romans 3:21-26
. 1 Corinthians 15:29-34
. Philippians 2:5-11
. 2 Timothy 4:1-8

3. Sermon Outlines Assignment: Create two sermon outlines based on what you have learned from the
course textbook and our class discussions. One outline must be based an Old Testament text listed below.
The other outline must be based a New Testament text listed below. Each outline must include the
following: (a) sermon title; (b) biblical text; (c) big idea; (d) main points or movements; (e) sub points or
sub movements; and (f) transitional sentences. Extra credit will be given for main points or movements
that are applicational in nature. Outlines are due on the fourth session of the course (November 15).

Old Testament

. Genesis 22:1-19
. Psalm 139:1-24
. Isaiah 6:1-13
. Daniel 3:1-30
. Hosea 11:1-11
. Zechariah 3:1-10

New Testament

. Matthew 16:13-20
. Romans 16:1-16
. 1 Corinthians 10:1-13
. 2 Corinthians 12:1-10
. Galatians 3:1-14
. Philippians 3:1-11

4. Sermon Introduction Assignment: For any one of the above 24 biblical texts (for which you have
already prepared a “big idea” or a sermon outline), write and deliver a fitting introduction for a sermon on
that passage. You will not preach an entire sermon, only an introduction. Your goal is to capture attention,
make a clear connection to the biblical text, and give your parishioners a reason to keep listening. You
have 5-7 minutes for the introduction, to be delivered on the fifth session of the course (November 22).

5. Sermon Delivery Assignment: Students taking the course for credit will deliver a 20-minute sermon in
class on one of the parables of Jesus. See the list below for your choice of biblical texts. On the third class
session (November 15), submit a list of your top five parable choices (with biblical texts) in the order of
your preference. Every effort will be made to give you your first choice. You will find out on the fourth
class session (November 22) which parable you will be preaching. Sermons will be delivered on the last
day of the course (December 6). A full manuscript is not necessary, but an extended outline is required
and must contain the following elements: (a) sermon title; (b) biblical text; (c) big idea; (d) written
introduction; (e) main points or movements; (f) sub points or sub movements; (g) transitional sentences;
and (h) written conclusion. Sermons will be evaluated using the form provided in class.

6. Sermon Evaluations Assignment: Students taking the course for credit will evaluate the sermons of their
classmates using the form provided in class. These forms are due on the last session of the course
(December 6), or if you need some extra time to complete the forms, you have up to seven (7) days to
mail them to the instructor.

CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS

1. Students are expected to attend all class sessions. Where there are legitimate family or pastoral
emergencies, please notify the instructor ahead of time in order to arrange for make-up work.

2. Students are expected to bring the Robinson textbook to class each session, along with note-taking
materials, and a non-paraphrase translation of the Bible. Respectful participation is expected.

3. In order to facilitate lecture comprehension and enhance the class discussion, all students are expected to
read the assigned chapters in the course textbook prior to each session. Such reading will be essential to
the discussion of that session’s topic, so students are highly encouraged to stay up to date.

4. For local preachers in the E.C.C., the guidelines established by the Conference Relations Commission
will be followed.
